Nonsense from all angles | Generative art diary
Browser interactivity and physical generativity.
I’m an artist and creative technologist. I write about generative art, code, creativity and other interconnected topics. You can expect a diary on Fridays sharing the things I’ve been working on. Thanks for joining me here. 💖
Hello!
It’s been an fun week since I released the Meaningful Nonsense print collection last Friday, and the first wave of orders is arriving in their new homes.
It’s especially nice because each print is unique so, as I generate them, I get to see the messages and think about how they’ll be interpreted by their owners. Thank you so much to everyone who has ordered so far!
Piter Pasma shared a photo of his when it arrived, titled “Empirical hybrids of non-descript dimensions”.
If you’d like to get yours, you can…
I’ve been trying to make more videos, as the harsh mistress that is social media instructs us is our burden. I produced this little piece about the prints and enjoyed the process, despite being a millennial who would generally be happier just taking landscape orientation photos.
I’ve also been messing around with some things related and some completely unrelated to this project, let’s go.
Things I’ve done this week
Interactive Handwriting
I’ve been getting interactive and making my handwriting code controllable in the browser.
First I made this little test, using the mouse position to control a few variables. Movement in the x-axis controls tilt and the y-axis controls thickness and “scramble distance”.
I’ve also been working on a version with a full UI.
This is still in progress and has more settings to be added!
Plotting Nonsense
It’s been described as “gloriously unhinged” and last time I shared any of this in the newsletter I lost a handful of subscribers, but you’re not the boss of me so here we go again.
I want to explore the more analogue side of generative art, where the medium and materials really contribute to the system. Plus I want to make a mess and see what happens.
I’m trying out using stuff like string, washers, ink and paint in my plotter to see what kind of effects I can create.
It’s pretty unpredictable but super fun to see what happens each time.
None of the results from this week really nailed it, but it’s all about trying things out and taking learnings for next time.
More to come!
Things I’ve enjoyed this week
Surely beating me in the unhinged stakes is this glitter roomba (which unfortunately I can’t find a proper credit for, but looks like it’s at a festival in Lille).
MountVitruvius’ insane textures.
Moodsoup is creating physical landscapes in acrylic modelling paste.
That’s all, thanks again for joining me!
I’ll leave you with this shot of my almost-complete evening embroidery project, and I’ll see you here next week.
