I want, I am, I do - and other sentence structures | Generative art diary
"I want to give you clarity. I am distilling truth. I reconfigure a cryptic dimension."
I write about generative art, code, creativity and other interconnected topics. You can expect a diary on Fridays sharing the art I’ve been working on. Thanks for joining me here. 💖
Hello!
Spring continues to emerge here in London and we’ve been visited by lots of blue sky days. There’s a tree right outside the living room window of my new flat that is so on the verge of being leafy and I can’t wait.
My new workspace is lovely and bright and I’ve been feeling very motivated.
Things I’ve done recently
Last year before I went away, I was working on a set of pieces featuring my handwriting and generated sentences, to make available as prints. I’d got as far as ordering test prints but didn’t get to a place I was ready to release them, so I’ve been returning to that this week.
I really enjoy the flowing effect in the ones with the larger sentences, but I’m not sure the semi-cursive handwriting makes sense at a large size. I put that idea aside - maybe I’ll explore the swirling effect in the future with a different way of creating the text.
For now I’m focusing on these types of pieces where there are lots of sentences and different effects applied, with varying degrees of readability.
Here are a couple of the pieces I’ve been working on this week.
My intention is to have several in these colourful styles, and then several in a more “natural” style, like this one.
I’ve been using the sentence generation system in different contexts for a while (diagram titles, notes on diagrams, statements of meaning, etc etc) so the different types of sentence structures had become a bit disordered. I’ve been tidying them up while working on these prints.
Next to each sentence structure, I’ve included an example of a sentence it could potentially produce. For clarity I kept the words chosen in these sentences consistent. I love the way the repetitive sentences sound together.
This also means I can easily produce images that contain a specific sentence type.
If all the sentences begin with “I” or if they are all questions, that creates different effects.
VIBES.
That’s all, thanks again for joining me!
I’ll leave you with this tiny new succulent that my friend propagated for me when she was looking after my plants, and I’ll see you here next week.
